School Committee Candidate: AJ Hoffman

Why are you running for School Committee and what particular skills do you bring to the position?

I’m running for school committee to continue our commitment to excellence in our schools. I believe our schools are something to be proud of, and it’s time for our community to see and feel that sense of pride too.

My thirty years of working in early childhood education gives me a unique perspective on our youngest learners, and I've learned that it takes a community to support successful schools. I'm a proud Salem Public School parent and advocate who believes the future of our schools is bright.

What is one step you will take as a School Committee member to advance education equity in Salem?

SPS has already been putting in work to support equity and I feel confident the direction we're headed in is a good one. I would like to continue moving us forward by supporting systems already put in place and helping to create new ones to support our most vulnerable students.

Student achievement has not yet rebounded after pandemic disruptions, but the ESSER funding that has supported students will expire in 2024. When considering the school budget next year, how will you balance continued student needs with potentially lower funding overall?

Our current School committee and Dr. Zrike  have been strategizing for the expiration of ESSER funds. If elected, I would get to help with upcoming considerations. I’d also like to note the new strategic plan, which will be presented next week. That document will guide all of our budgetary decisions.

Plans for constructing a new high school are moving forward, as the city recently appointed a high school construction project task force. How will you exercise appropriate oversight and support for the project?

For the construction of the new high school I’d love to see thoughtful, forward-thinking academic spaces that are flexible for multi purpose teaching. I’d also like us to put in accommodations for our neurodivergent learners to help limit overstimulation, such as lights, sound, and temperature fluctuations so that learning can be easier for all.
