Ward 4 Candidate: Ian McLeod

Why are you running for Councillor and what particular skills can you bring to the position?

I am running for City Council because i feel that ward 4 needs to have their voice heard. Increase the communication for the ward. But my 1st concern would be caring for the people in my ward. Making sure their voices are heard throughout the city.

Residents are facing housing instability and displacement. Do you have specific plans that would protect renters in the city?

Make it a priority to understand some of these contracts with contracgors and property owners. If we offer deals to contractors to have some low income units, those untis avhe to remain low income for the life of the building. Offer some sort of kickback to the larger property owners to not increase the rent as much.

Salem is already seeing the effects of the climate crisis, including flooding during storms and high tides. Focusing on what you would do, what are your top priorities to mitigate the climate crisis?

All of the issues listed in the resilient together dashboard are interwoven. When reading it you can see how one thing helps improve another. I would have my top three be Energy, mobility, and infrastructure.

Salem strives to be a diverse, equitable, and inclusive city. What have you done to lead on these ideals and how will you support work in this area?

This year I was involved with Pride and the 283rd Negro Election Day parade. Two very different, but important events. I plan on getting more involved with these organizations over the next year to help ensure these events continue to get bigger and show the importance of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive Salem.

On average, 30% of Salem residents voted in the past municipal elections. Please outline some ideas you have that can enhance voter engagement and elections.

Having voter registration drives, especially at some of these apartment buildings. Where new people are moving in all the time. Get the students in school excited about being able to vote. Start reminding the residents earlier of elections and all the ways they can vote.
