Candidate Statement: Every election is important. Local elections are not an exception. Independent voices are important. Salem deserves voices that will listen to and speak for the residents. My experience in Salem as a community activist, and in city government has given me the skill set required to be that voice.

Andrew Smith

Candidate Statement: I'm Andrew Smith and I'm running for Ward 2 so that Salem continues to Grow Stronger Together. I'm an actor, writer, and professor, but also a dad of two who wants to keep our city on the right path as we confront growing challenges in our community and beyond (i.e. Federal government).

Top Priorities:

GROW - We need to provide access to housing. Not just mean quantity, but well-planned, quality housing of varied types (permanent supportive, senior, starter homes, etc) that keeps wealth in our community rather than send it to larger landlords and developers out of state. I want us to create a rental registry and community land trust to do this.

STRONGER - Salem has to be resilient and resistant and that means to shifts in the labor market, education and job training, and climate change mitigation. I love projects like the Crowley wind terminal which is an example of the intersection of all three of these issues.

TOGETHER - Everyone in this community has a worthwhile voice that I want to hear. From coffee chats to town halls, I'll be accessible, accountable, and attentive. This also means supporting our most vulnerable populations such as the unhoused, unemployed, and undocumented. We're all one collective Salem with one collective future.
